The Physics & Philosophy Society (PhysPhil)

About

Our society has its roots in a number of informal get-togethers between two Physics and two Philosophy postgrads in the Spring of 2011. In the summer of 2011, PhysPhil was founded by William Simpson for the purpose of bringing together a number of postgrads with shared interests for dialogue and discussion on a semi-regular basis. Our meetings take place in the Physics & Astronomy Building (usually room 338). We are not affiliated with the student union at this time.

Recent hilights

Our meetings consist of a discussion of set readings and presentations (given by members and invited speakers). Our recent meetings have touched on the following topics:

  • August 26th - The nature of science and the nature of the physical world. (William Simpson)
  • September 9th - Human nature and the nature of reality (Kaley McCluskey, Ryan Mullins)
  • September 26th - The concept of time in Physics and Metaphysics (Simon Horsley, Ryan Mullins)

Latest developments

Our chairman is in Europe on research visits, from October to January; there are no official group meetings scheduled during this time. In Febrary, we will have our first reading symposium. Please have your presentations ready by then. In the mean time, members should schedule meetings with their reading partners for some time during December-January.

In Spring 2011, we look forward to having Prof Katherine Hawley speak to us about her work in metaphysics, and the interaction between Physics and Metaphysics.
