  • 10/05/2011Giuseppe and Lara has been demonstrating interactive experiments related to sound and resonance, climate change and energy saving and basics of how a film or digital camara works in the Lab. Around 100 pupils aged between 12 and 13 from Forfar Academy took part in experiments

21/04/11-Lara and Sarah organised at workshop entitled "Exploring the Science of light" at Dalhousie Building at Dundee University to promote the uptake of Physics and Engineering by Girls. The workshop consisted on a 35 min presentation with several experiments related with IR to UV light and lasers. Around 70 students from different schools of the area attended the workshop which was one of the seven different ones organised in this event.
12/03/11-Lara assisted at Fife Science Festival, which was hosted by University of St Andrews and attended by almost 500 visitors. and where she demonstrated experiments related with "Seeing life through a new light" including lasers and light, microscopes, the use of an endescope and fluoresence demsotrations.

14/11/10-Around 880 visitors at the Family Open Day organised by Sensation Science Centre, Dundee to celebrate the final day of Dundee Science Festival 2010, saw our own outreach display, entitled "Beyond the Rainbow". Graham, Lara and James organised interactive demonstrations of visible, infra-red and ultraviolet light, as well as a laser activity, an interactive computer presentation detailing how lasers work and how to create cold atoms, and a video of laser applications. This activity also appeared in the news! here
  • 27/10/10-Lara presented a light workshop entitled "Exploring the Science of Light" during the Second Girls into Physics and Engineering event at George Watson's College, Edinburgh organised by IOP and WES. The aim of the event was to promote the uptake by girls of Physics and Engineering. Over 180 students had the opportunity to visit and participate in the workshop where the girls could learn about IR camera, understand the phenomena of fluorescence or how a laser works. The presentation of the talk can be downloaded here and the video can be viewed here.

  • 27/10/10-Graham presented the Quantum Soc lunchtime lecture,"Atoms coler than space: How & why" with around 30 people attending the talk. The videos of the presentation can be found here and here.
  • 25/6/10-Tiffany and Graham assisted with hands on demonstrations at University of St Andrews Science Camp. Around 40 primary 6 pupils from Fife attended, and were helped through experiments involving conservation of angular momentum (requiring a rotating chair and weights), electric charge (Van de Graaff generator) and magnetism (including extracting the iron from breakfast cereal), as well as the ever-popular giant bubble experiment.
  • 3/4/10 to 4/4/10- Over 400 visitors to the Science in the City exhibition at Sensation Science Centre, Dundee, saw the debut of our own outreach display, entitled "Light, Lasers and Really Cold Atoms". Graham organised an interactive "Create a rainbow" task suitable for all ages, as well as demonstrations with lasers, an interactive computer presentation detailing how lasers work and how to create cold atoms, and a video of laser applications. The presentation is available for download here, and the video can be viewed here. Graham also took part in an "ask the scientists" session involving a school group, where he was asked a range of questions about physics. The event was designed to showcase the work of local academics at the Universities of Dundee, Abertay, and St Andrews, and to encourage locals to consider scientific issues and scientific careers.

  • 13/3/10-James and Graham both assisted at Fife Science Festival, which was hosted by University of St Andrews and attended by almost 500 visitors. James demonstrated experiments with electricity including the Van de Graaff generator and the mechanics of angular momentum using a spinning chair, whilst Graham assisted in the "Seeing life through a new light" demostrations and ran "the Big Bubble"experiment, where children of all ages (including at least one faculty member) were encased in a giant bubble.

  • 21/2/10 to 22/2/10-Graham has been demonstrating interactive experiments related to sound and resonance in the Lab in a Lorry at Madras College, St Andrews. Around 140 pupils aged between 11 and 14 took part in experiments to find the factors which influence the frequency at which a wine glass "sings", and then used strobe lighting to view the oscillations of the glasses for themselves.

  • 27/6/08-Lara and James have been supervising interactive workshops for primary school pupils at the School of Physics and Astronomy, St Andrews as part of the "Hands on Science at St Andrews" event, which is a series of workshops organised as part of the "Seeing life through a new light" programme. Around 50 students aged between 9 and 11 took part in experiments with light such as using reflection and refraction of light to answer the question "Why does a fish in a tank of water look bigger than it really is?", and investigating how light travels, how it can change direction, how a microscope works and some applications of optical fibres in medicine.
