"Weapons on the Wall"

Introduction

Aims and Objectives

The aim of this Detailed Study course is to provide an understanding of the role played by propaganda posters in Britain during the Second World War, and to evaluate their usefulness as historical source material on this important period of modern British history.

Course Structure

The course is taught over a period of five weeks at the end of the Second Semester. Weekly tutorials are held to analyse the posters and discuss issues arising out of the study. "Gobbet" exercises - short analytical commentaries on selected posters - are submitted each week. Four such exercises are assessed.

Assessment

Each "gobbet" exercise is assessed separately. The best three individual marks obtained for the four exercises are averaged to form the mark for the course.

One section of the end-of-semester examination is devoted to the Detailed Study. Candidates choose two gobbet questions from five.
