The course is assessed by a combination of continuous assessment,
constituting 40% of the overall grade, and a degree
examination, constituting 60% of the total.
- Continuous Assessment
-
The coursework element is the average of the marks awarded for two essays, (or one essay and one seminar paper) and a third mark for (mainly) oral participation.
The oral assessment mark is awarded for the
presentation of a short position paper; for
oral participation in class discussion throughout the course; and
for contributions to a dedicated WebCT discussion-board. Each element constitutes 1/3 of the total.
In addition, students record their engagement with course material,
details of seminar preparation and feedback, and the development of their
ideas in a weekly course diary. (The course diary forms the basis
of any appeal against the oral assessment mark.)
- Degree Examination
-
The examination consists of a three-hour paper sat at the end of the course. Candidates answer three questions chosen from a total of
nine.
Examples of recent degree examination past
papers are available on this website.

scale, including the criteria for assessment, in use in the School of History are also available.
