The Soviet Union, 1917-1945

Assessment

The course is assessed by a combination of continuous assessment, constituting 40% of the overall grade, and a degree examination, constituting 60% of the total.

Continuous Assessment

The coursework element is the average of the marks awarded for two essays, (or one essay and one seminar paper) and a third mark for (mainly) oral participation.

The oral assessment mark is awarded for the presentation of a short position paper; for oral participation in class discussion throughout the course; and for contributions to a dedicated WebCT discussion-board. Each element constitutes 1/3 of the total.

In addition, students record their engagement with course material, details of seminar preparation and feedback, and the development of their ideas in a weekly course diary. (The course diary forms the basis of any appeal against the oral assessment mark.)

Degree Examination

The examination consists of a three-hour paper sat at the end of the course. Candidates answer three questions chosen from a total of nine.

Examples of recent degree examination past papers are available on this website.
