Welcome to the University of St Andrews
Polish Society!
Welcome to our website. The society, created in November 2004, aims to promote Polish culture and history and integrate the Polish student community closer with St Andrews. We also, of course, organise numerous social events, often in conjunction with other European societies at the university.
The society was officially established in November 2004 with the aim of uniting Poles and students with an interest in Poland. It was started by a group of Polish friends who realized that upon Poland's entry into the European Union, the number of students from Poland would greatly increase. This outlines one of our chief aims: to help the incoming students from Poland become acquainted with the university, as well as to keep Poles connected and in touch with one another. Another aim of the group is to celebrate and promote Polish culture and history within the university. This enables students from all cultures and of all nationalities to be able to experience and enjoy what Polish traditions have to offer.
Although it is a relatively young society, the number of members is growing as our reputation is developing and more events are being held. The society has so far organized a significant number of events. The first one, back in 2005, was a lecture about Pope John Paul II's legacy in the weeks following his death. Each year we together celebrate traditional Polish Wigilia (Christmas Eve) and Wielkanoc (Easter). We have taken part in every Polish national election so far, by organizing trips to the Polish Consulate in Edinburgh. Our most recognized event is the infamous Polish Vodka Night attracting Zubrowka-lovers from every corner of the university and town. We hold regular movie screenings of many Polish masterpieces. We also aim to invite an interesting Polish figure each year - in 2007 Professor Zbigniew Pelczynski paid visit to his alma mater.
Since 2008 we have also developed closer links with other Polish student societies of the UK by organizing the Congress of the Polish Student Societies in Oxford, something that by now has become an annual event. We are proud to announce that the upcopming Congress will be hosted by us, along with the University of Edinburgh Polish Society.
