Dr Peter Lehr is Lecturer in Terrorism Studies at the CSTPV, School of International Relations, University of St. Andrews. He is also Visiting Lecturer at the South Asia Institute, University of Heidelberg, Germany. Before taking up his current position in September 2007, he researched the nexus between piracy and maritime terrorism as Lloyd’s Maritime Intelligence Group Research Fellow, also at the CSTPV, from September 2004 to August 2007. Prior to that, he was Lecturer at the South Asia Institute, University of Heidelberg, from September 1996 to August 2004.
Dr Lehr has considerable research and teaching experience in the subject areas of Terrorism/Political Violence and Asian Security Relations. Being a regional specialist on the Indian Ocean, he currently specialises on research in the following areas: Maritime Safety and Security in the Indian Ocean/Asia-Pacific (focussing on piracy and maritime terrorism); Political Violence and Terrorism in South and Southeast Asia; and Organised Crime in South and Southeast Asia. He also works on Critical Infrastructure Protection, with a focus on Air- and Seaport Security.
Dr Lehr has published on political Islam in South and Southeast Asia, and on Indian Ocean maritime security issues. He is the editor of Violence at Sea: Piracy in the Age of Global Terrorism (Routledge 2007) and co-editor (together with Rupert Herbert-Burns and Sam Bateman) of Lloyd’s MIU Handbook of Maritime Security (Taylor & Francis 2009). Currently, he is working on a book manuscript on piracy from ancient to modern times, to be published by Yale University Press in Winter 2012/13. He earned his PhD (Dr. rer. pol.) from the University of Heidelberg, Germany.
