Welcome to Canmore, the home of the Catholic faith in St Andrews!

Welcome to Canmore, and the University of St Andrews Catholic Society! Supported by the chaplain, the Society aims to provide an intellectual, spiritual and social framework for Catholic University life, through a wide-range of events centred around Canmore, the Catholic Chaplaincy on The Scores.

Our Aims:

Since the late 1940’s the Society has aimed to promote Catholicism and its values amongst the student population and beyond. It has also striven to create a welcoming environment in which Catholics and non-Catholics alike may socialise.

What do we do?

To achieve our aims we have weekly talks given by outside speakers on a variety of topics from Celtic Christianity to Bioethics. Guest speakers have included notable people like Anne Widdecombe MP and Lord Alton of Liverpool. Talks take place at 8pm every Wednesday of term in the Common room of the Catholic Chaplaincy, Canmore 24 The Scores.

In addition to talks we also hold weekly dinners every Sunday evening at 7.30pm during term, charged at a very reasonable £3.50 for members and £4 for non-members for two-courses. Through the year we have a few parties including our annual Society Ball.

The Society traditionally takes an annual four day retreat to Pluscarden Abbey near Elgin, which is an unique opportunity for spiritual refreshment.

The Catholic Chaplain, Canon Brian Halloran runs a weekly session called Faith Enquiry, which is a systematic series of talks on all aspects of Catholicism. These are particularly suitable for those considering reception into the church or even Catholics who have questions about their faith. Talks are held every Monday evening at 8pm in the Chaplaincy Common Room. The subject of the talk is announced in the Parish Newsletter and after Society talks.

Getting involved:

Please pay a visit any time to the Catholic Chaplaincy, especially at one of our events where you can become a member of the Society (£5 per year) if you wish and receive a copy of our programme of events. Our events are published online and via a mailing list, which you can join.
(Send an e-mail to cathsoc@st-and.ac.uk)

We are always in need of another enthusiastic visitor to add to the community atmosphere.
