Breakaway is the St Andrews University Hillwalking Club. We organise walks and hikes for all abilities, generally every other weekend.

Day Trips

Day trips will take the whole day, leaving at 7:45am and returning to St Andrews about 8:00pm. Our day trips always end at a pub, so a little money for drinks and food is recommended.

A day trip costs £10.

Weekend trips

Our weekend trips allow us to explore further away, to places such as the Isle of Skye and the English Lake District.

We will provide accommodation, transport and evening meals. Sleeping bags are usually not needed. You will need the normal equipment, plus extra food and some casual clothes.
Weekend trips usually leave St Andrews at 5:00pm on Friday and return on Monday or Sunday evening.

Equipment

You will need good hiking boots, waterproofs, lunch and water. A full list of equipment is available here, in English.

Signups

The signups for all walks are held on Wednesdays, at 1900 in the union, on a first come first served basis. The dates for signups are published on this website a few weeks beforehand. There will also be an email sent out through our mailing list.

You must be a member of Breakaway to come on our walks, membership is £6 a year.

If you cannot attend the signup then please send somebody else to sign up for you. It is strictly one place per person.

If you have signed up but cannot attend the walk then please tell us as soon as possible, since we cannot refund your payment unless we find somebody to take your place.

Social events

We are a very active club, and hold social evenings (pub nights) every Monday from 9:00pm in "The Whey Pat" Everybody is welcome to these, it's a good opportunity to meet your fellow walkers and ask any questions about Breakaway or hillwalking in general.
