About Astrosoc

The site is very new and as such there is likely to be some errors in the content. If you spot any, I would be most grateful if you could drop me an email to point them out.

AstroSoc - the University of St Andrews Astronomical Society - is a wide and varied collection of individuals united in the common interest of astronomy.

Although primarily aimed at existing students, AstroSoc membership is open to all. Founded back in the mists of time, around 1972, AstroSoc has around 100 members and is under the management of the supreme wisdom that is the committee.

Our main events are:

  • Observing evenings: Up-to-date observing information can be found in the observing column of this page.
  • Talks: by people in the field (previously, by such noted figures as the great Sir Patrick Moore and the Astronomer Royal for Scotland, John Brown) on Wednesday afternoons (details will be e-mailed, if they're not, let me know).

At our disposal on Observing evenings are the two Meade telescopes at the observatories. We have a 10" and a 16" Meade LX-200 Schmidt-Cassegrains, both are equipped with CCD cameras connected to IBM PCs, so you can capture images from them.
