Foundations of Logical Consequence Workshop II: The Logic of Denial

Workshop

  Time: 24 October, 2009 - 25 October, 2009
Location: Edgecliffe, The Scores, St Andrews

After Frege's famous discussion, philosophers and logicians have written extensively on the relationship between denial and negation. The workshop will focus on the logical connection between the two in the context of recent literature on how to treat denial in a formal setting. Among the critical questions are: Is denial best analysed as the assertion of a negation, or should it be introduced as a primitive speech act? Are there different notions of denial corresponding to logically distinct negations? Is there a relationship between logical consequence and rational demands imposed by the norms of assertion and denial? In particular, what is the connection between multiple-conclusion logic and assertion/denial?

The workshop will bring together international experts on these and related topics. The aim is to investigate novel extensions of the recent work on denial, with a specific emphasis on formal work. Arché will make a digest of the workshop available online to stimulate future discussion.
