What is the coastguard?
HM Coastguard is a section of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency with responsibilities for:
- co-ordinating rescue at sea
- persons at risk of injury or death on the cliffs or shoreline of the United Kingdom
- reports of actual or potential threats of maritime pollution
- accident prevention capacity by providing safety education for professional and recreational mariners, as well as students and children in colleges and schools
