Formal semantics of natural language is a young field, but recent years have seen rapid growth in the sophistication and power of semantic theories. Still, there remain deep disagreements about foundational issues. This workshop will bring together linguists and philosophers to address such issues as:
- the target and aim of semantic theory;
- the role of truth conditions in semantics (and thus the prospects
for dynamic, expressivist, or relativist approaches);
- the analogies
between natural and formal languages;
- the history of natural language semantics and the relevance for contemporary
semantics of the views of Montague, Davidson, Grice, and others;
- the
nature and role of propositions;
- critiques of semantics by Chomsky and
others, and the prospects of Chomsky-inspired internalist approaches
Speakers include: Derek Ball (St Andrews), Andy Egan (Rutgers), Kathrin Gluer-Pagin (Stockholm), Ray Jackendoff (Tufts), Barbara Partee (Massachusetts), Brian Rabern (ANU), Robert van Rooij (Amsterdam), Robert Stalnaker (MIT), Jason Stanley (Rutgers), Scott Soames (USC), Seth Yalcin (Berkeley) |
