There are lots of ways to get involved and support sustainable travel at St Andrews—whether that’s getting active, volunteering, or making greener choices day to day:

When travelling on University business, take a moment to consider your travel choices and their environmental impact. Our travel policy outlines expectations and guidance to help you choose lower-carbon options wherever possible.

Cycling

We’re making it easier than ever to cycle:

  • Use the Bike Pool to hire a refurbished bike or attend maintenance sessions
  • Borrow an e-bike free for up to 24 hours through the Green Commute Initiative
  • Pick up free bike lights during winter months
  • Join our Bike to Work Breakfasts—free, social, and a great way to start your day

Cycle to work scheme

Save money and support your wellbeing by cycling to work. Our salary sacrifice scheme allows you to spread the cost of a bike and equipment (up to £2,500) over 12–24 months, tax efficiently.

Getting around sustainably

Bus
Enjoy affordable travel across Scotland with major discounts available. Staff and students receive discount off Stagecoach services, with additional options like Megabus.

Train
Leuchars station connects St Andrews to the wider UK network. Plan your journey with National Rail, then take a short bus, taxi, or cycle into town.

Driving
If you need to drive, consider lift sharing to cut costs and emissions. The University prioritises parking for shared vehicles and is expanding this across campus.

Electric vehicles
Charging points are available across campus via ChargePlace Scotland, supporting a transition to lower-emission travel.

Air travel

Air travel is sometimes necessary, but it has a significant carbon impact. If you’re planning a trip, consider whether alternatives could work.

What we are doing

We regularly survey staff and students to understand travel behaviour and improve sustainable options. See the latest findings in our Travel Survey Summary.
