In the first year of a degree programme in the Faculty of Science, you will be given considerable flexibility and may take new subjects, some of which require no previous knowledge. You can choose three different science subjects with the possibility of pursuing any one to Honours level, or you can focus your studies on just one subject. You will also be given the option to explore modules in other Faculties.
You will then progress to second year after passing the correct first-year modules; some students with appropriate qualifications may be offered direct entry to second year.
If you are studying for a BSc, you will be admitted to a two-year Honours programme at the end of second year, provided your performance so far has been of an acceptable standard. Your final choice of Honours programmes will depend upon the modules you chose to study within your first year.
If you are studying for one of the Faculty's five-year degrees, such as the MMath or MPhys, which involve more advanced study and a more substantial final-year dissertation, you must meet a higher standard of performance in the relevant second-year modules.
You can read more information about the core and optional modules for specific degree programmes in the course search, which offers more details about the structure and content of each programme.
