International Undergraduate Scholarships

You do not need to wait until you have received an offer of a place to apply for the scholarship. You will be able to access the scholarship application form two working days after submitting your application to study at St Andrews.

Most international undergraduate scholarships can be applied for through the University of St Andrews International Undergraduate Scholarships application form.

The University of St Andrews is pleased to offer a range of scholarships to undergraduate applicants starting in 2026 with an Overseas fee status. Scholarships are available based on academic excellence, financial need or a combination of both. All aspects of the scholarship application will be taken into consideration and none in isolation.

The scholarships are aimed to assist applicants as they start their higher education journey. Applicants are asked to describe their academic achievements, life experiences and personal circumstances.

International Undergraduate Scholarships

Scholarships under the collection of International Undergraduate Scholarships are available through the University of St Andrews International Undergraduate Scholarships application form. Geography, subject and level of study criteria vary across the available scholarships. Full details of each scholarship are provided on the individual webpages:

After completing and submitting the application form, you will be considered automatically for any of the above scholarships for which you are eligible. You can only apply once for the above scholarships. If further scholarships become available in this scheme after you have applied, you will automatically be considered for all scholarships for which you are eligible, without having to apply again.

Value of award (per year)

The value and number of awards will be confirmed by the beginning of December 2025.

Duration of award

Varies from one year to the full duration of a student’s undergraduate programme. See individual scholarship web pages for full details of each award’s duration.

At what stage of my course application can I apply for this scholarship?

You can apply for the scholarship after you have submitted your application for a place at St Andrews. Allow at least two working days for processing and issue of your log in details before applying for the scholarship. You do not need to wait until you have received an offer of a place before applying for the scholarship.

Additional criteria

The scholarships are only available to students entering their first year of an undergraduate degree (this includes direct entry into year two of the course, but it does not include students transferring from another institution).

Applicants who do wish to be considered for financial needs-based scholarships will be required to enter in their gross, annual household income in GBP, along with an exchange rate (if required). Please visit the Financial Funding Tool on how to calculate your household income.

Applicants who do not wish to be considered for any of the financial needs-based scholarships, should answer 'no' to this question in the application form and enter 0 for their household income. This will mean they will ONLY be considered for the International Excellence Scholarship, provided they meet the eligibility criteria and provide the necessary references and statement of motivation.

Please note that some of our scholarships are donor funded, to be considered for these scholarships, you must select that you accept the conditions for donor funding in the application form. Please check the individual webpages to see which scholarships are supported by donor funding.

Scholarship selection

Selection is based on financial need, academic excellence or both depending on the scholarship. The application form will allow you to articulate or evidence any of the following that apply to you. We encourage applicants to use the free text boxes within the application form to expand upon any of the below points.

Academic Excellence

Please elaborate on your academic achievements which could include:

  • Prizes
  • Paid or unpaid internships and work placements.
  • Being a member of an academic group or committee which focuses on academic achievement.

Non-academic achievement

Please provide details of any non-academic achievements. This could include music, drama, the arts, sport, leadership roles or community involvement.

Financial Need

Please visit the Financial Funding Tool on how to calculate your household income.

Please demonstrate a case for financial need, including: past requirements for needs-based funding, current financial circumstances and potential changes to financial circumstances.

In the application form, you will have the opportunity to provide a statement in support of your case for financial need.

Personal circumstances

In the application form, there is a specific personal circumstances section. In this space, you should provide us with any information you feel is relevant to give us a picture of you and your educational journey. Please elaborate if any of the below circumstances apply:

You live in a neighbourhood that is classed as a socio-economically disadvantaged area.

You have a disability.

You are from a minority group.

You act as a carer for a relative, friend or care for young children (under the age of 16).

You are care experienced. Please let us know if you have lived in public care or as a looked-after child, including:

  • with foster carers under local authority care
  • in a residential children’s home
  • being ‘looked after at home’ with a supervision order
  • living with friends or relatives in kinship care

Note this does not refer to time spent in boarding schools, working in care or a health care setting or if you are a carer yourself.

In the application form, you will also be asked to explain how a scholarship will assist your learning. Please consider the impact a scholarship could have on your time at St Andrews, thinking about how it will support you with your studies and your personal goals.

References and Statement of Motivation (International Excellence only)

References and a statement of motivation are required if you wish to be considered for the International Excellence scholarship. Detailed information regarding the references and what we are seeking in the statement of motivation can be found on the International Excellence webpage.

Applicants who do not wish to be considered for the International Excellence Scholarship should upload a Word document stating they do not wish to be considered.

It is extremely important that you give complete and accurate information when applying to us for funding.

Your course and funding application are not linked and applying for funding in no way impedes your course application.

How to apply

All the scholarships are available for application through the University of St Andrews International Undergraduate Scholarships application.

This scholarship is available for application through the scholarship and funding catalogue in the Scholarships and Funding section of My application.

After you have applied to a new course beginning in the academic year 2026, you will be provided with login details for the My application portal. You must allow at least two working days for processing and issue of your log in details before you can apply for this scholarship.
