UKRI open access policy

Open Access Fund for long-form publications - applications open
UKRI hold a dedicated fund of £3.5 million designed to support open access costs for monographs, book chapters, and edited collections within the scope of the policy. The fund supports a range of open access models, including Diamond OA and processing charges.

The new UKRI open access policy was announced in August 2021 and replaces the previous policy which was in place from 2013.

The policy relates to:

  • articles submitted after 1 April 2022
  • long-form works published after 1 January 2024

“[To make] the outputs of UKRI funded research more accessible and reusable – for the benefit of  research, society and the economy; providing sustainable support for open access and better value for money; encouraging the development of new models of open access publishing; and supporting the adoption of open access in the UK and internationally.”
