Biography
I studied Arabic and Turkish as an undergraduate at Durham University, and spent my year abroad split between Damascus, Syria and Sana’a, Yemen. After graduating, I worked as an English teacher at a university in a small town in eastern Sudan for two years, then moved to Istanbul in Turkey where I taught English and studied Turkish. I returned to Durham University in 2005 for a Masters in Arabic-English Translation and Interpreting, and stayed there afterwards to teach Arabic to undergraduates and postgraduates, moving to St Andrews in 2011.
As well as Arabic and Turkish, I enjoy studying other languages and have taken courses in Persian, Scottish Gaelic and French. My current project is learning Georgian and I recently spent a few months on an intensive language course in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Teaching
I am involved in teaching Arabic in the core language modules at both Sub-Honours and Honours levels, and am the module co-ordinator for the modules AR1001 and AR1002 (Arabic for Beginners 1 and 2).
