Research areas

After training in General Practice, Robert completed fellowships in academic General Practice (Usher Institute, University of Edinburgh), and Acute Rural Care  (NES funded, Isle of Skye).  These experiences galvanised his interest in and commitment to rural and remote healthcare delivery and training.

From 2017 to 2022 he was Deputy Director and Lead Generalist Clinical Mentor (GCM) of the Scottish Graduate Entry Medical Programme (ScotGEM) based in St Andrews School of Medicine.  He was privileged to lead a team of generalist clinical educators across four partner health boards, and had responsibility for the design, implementation and development of this novel educator role.

As ScotGEM was commissioned by Scottish Government to address the workforce requirements of rural communities, he is particularly interested in the role of education in creating a sustainable, socially accountable and high-quality medical workforce.

In 2022 Robert moved to the Irish College of General Practice as Regional Director of higher specialist training in General Practice for the South Dublin / Leinster area.   He continues in an Honorary Senior Lecturer capacity with the Universities of St Andrews and Dundee.
