Molecular genetics of human breast cancer
Research concentrates on the phenomenon of familial cancers, particularly of the breast. It includes: participation in 'cancer family' clinics in Dundee and Edinburgh for assessment of risk to members of such families, investigation of interactions between genetic and environmental risk factors, and evaluation of screening and intervention strategies. Laboratory work concentrates on characterisation of mutations predisposing to breast and other cancers, particularly in the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genes. Questions addressed include: the frequencies of specific mutations in the Scottish population, (compared with others throughout the world), the clinical consequences of particular mutations, and the biochemical/cellular effects of gene inactivation or alteration.
