The School of Mathematics and Statistics has ten broad research groups actively engaging with research across the discipline.

Algebra and Combinatorics

Areas of expertise include groups, semigroups, computational algebra, interactions with computer science, and algebraic and geometric combinatorics.
Analysis

Broad interests include fractal geometry, ergodic theory, probability theory, Fourier analysis and geometric measure theory.
Geometry

Our main areas of research are rigid geometry, geometric group theory, symplectic geometry, and tropical geometry
History of Mathematics

This group studies the way mathematicians have developed maths in the past. It runs the well-known MacTutor History of Mathematics website.
Machine Learning and Statistics Methodology

This group develops new methods in areas such as Bayesian inference, bioinformatics, experimental design, genetics, population size estimation and smoothing.
Mathematical Biology

Specialises in ODE, PDE, agent-based and SDE modelling of biomedical problems from oncology to epidemiology, gene regulation, cell-signalling and development.
Solar and Magnetospheric Theory

This group's main focus is on solving the MHD equations, a set of coupled, non-linear partial differential equations, to model solar and space plasmas.
Statistical Ecology

Working with colleagues in biology and geography, this group develops and applies mathematical and statistical methods to solve ecological problems.
Statistical Medicine and Molecular Biology

Spans areas from clinical research methodology to analysing high throughput genomic, genetic, transcriptomic and proteomic data in disease and healthy tissue.
Vortex Dynamics

Focuses on the fundamental nature of geophysical and astrophysical flows, including the mathematical properties of the equations and their numerical solution.
