Research areas

Dr Augusto Rocha is an Assistant Professor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Edinburgh Business School, mainly working on entrepreneurial ecosystems and regional development. His research areas include understanding how social and financial capital plays a role in regional development, focusing on unveiling why some places perform better than others. This research agenda covers social capital, social networks, entrepreneurial communities, entrepreneurial finance and ecosystems.

Augusto has been developing a research approach utilising uncommon metrics to understand regional development alongside Professor Ross Brown in the University of St Andrews School of Management. They recently published articles in top journals (ABS 4 and 4*) using social media data and assessing complexity in entrepreneurial ecosystems' lifecycles. Additionally, Augusto worked with colleagues from the Organisations and Society group in the innovative R&D centre for the video games industry (InGAME) in partnership with Abertay University and the University of Dundee.

Before joining academia, Augusto worked as a (fin)tech entrepreneur, where his passion for entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial communities arose. This experience gives him the advantage of using practical insights in his research and teaching.
