Prepare for a taught module rollover in Moodle
Updated on: 2 February 2026
Understand the rollover process for taught modules and their configuration in Moodle.
There is an annual rollover in Moodle. This guide follows on from the processes detailed in: Prepare for a taught module rollover in MMS.
Taught modules
As standard, all modules rolled over are provided with an associated Moodle course. Schools can request either of the following options:
- A copy of the Moodle course from the last time it ran
- A blank course
Where there is no previous version of a module in Moodle, a blank course will be created by default.
Enrolments on Moodle courses linked to taught modules are managed in the Module Management System (MMS).
Shared Moodle courses
Some Schools use a single Moodle course for two or more taught modules where the content for those modules is identical. For example, where a module is delivered to students on campus and also delivered to remote students as a distance learning module – with a different module code.
Schools should confirm:
- groups of modules that share a Moodle course
- whether the shared course should be copied from an existing Moodle course or be created blank
The Technology and Enhanced Learning team will assess all requests for the creation of new shared courses. Requests that do not meet the required criteria will be rejected.
Standalone courses
Schools need to confirm any standalone Moodle courses that need to be rolled over. For course enrolments, Schools should confirm which of the following options they require:
- Copy all staff roles to the new course.
- Copy only Course Coordinators to the new course.
- Do not copy any staff to the new course. The School must provide at least one staff member to be enrolled as a Course Coordinator.
Course Coordinators can enrol people in several roles within a course. They can also assign the Course Coordinator role to other staff if multiple people administer the course.
