Postgraduate scholarships
Postgraduate and PhD students make a crucial contribution to the University. They bring skills, knowledge and passion for their subjects. They shape new ideas, share insights, and inspire innovation. They are the leaders of the future, who will change society, culture, health and science for the benefit of generations to come.
Postgraduate recruitment in the UK faces declining public investment. Combined with new barriers to international recruitment and the increasing cost of living, the University is at a disadvantage in a competitive international market.
To address these challenges and sustain the University’s position as a leading research institution, we have identified the need for philanthropic support at both Masters and PhD level as a central and urgent priority of our £300 million Making Waves Campaign.
Help us to make waves of opportunity by enabling the brightest minds to come to St Andrews and change the world.

Access to postgraduate study
St Andrews is home to around 800 postgraduate taught students and 900 postgraduate research students. In order to continue do diversify our postgraduate student community, we need to ensure funding is available for those who need it.
Why are PhD candidates so important?
Talented PhD candidates are the lifeblood of any research institution. Their curiosity and creativity drive the University’s research engine and enable senior academics to pursue their cutting-edge research at speed and scale.
The ‘Handsel’ scheme
The University’s ‘Handsel’ scheme (named after an old Scots word for a gift to mark the start of an enterprise) offers a fee waiver for all PhD candidates whose stipend at research council rates is supported by donors and other external funders. This means when a donor commits to a stipend, the University will match it with internal investment required to create a full PhD scholarship.
St Leonard’s Masters Scholarships
St Leonard’s Postgraduate College at the University of St Andrews offers a range of scholarships for postgraduate taught one-year Masters applicants, which are available to UK and international students.
Sanctuary Scholarships
Sanctuary Scholarships support individuals seeking sanctuary in the UK, many of whom have little or no access to student finance. Since 2019, St Andrews has proudly offered these awards at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
