Burnwynd: awards for postgraduate research of Art History and of local history

Burnwynd gives annual bursaries for postgraduate research in:

  • Local history, through the St Andrews Local History Foundation, and;
  • in Art History, through the Catherine and Alfred Forrest Trust.

These bursaries are primarily available for students at the University of St Andrews, though applications from students at other Scottish universities will be considered in exceptional cases.

About

Alfred and Catherine Forrest lived at Burnwynd on the Lade Braes in St Andrews. Alfred was a former Principal of Plymouth College of Art and Catherine, née Carstairs, was a graduate of the University of St Andrews and a former teacher of history. Mrs Forrest had, in her retirement, written a book of family and local history Living in St Andrews, published by the University of St Andrews Library.

Dedicated to St Andrews, local history, and art, and the deep value they placed in scholarship, the Forrests decided to leave their estate principally for the benefit of postgraduate students of History and of Art at the University of St Andrews. These funds are administered through two funds: the St Andrews Local History Foundation, and the Catherine and Alfred Forrest Trust. Burnwynd History and Art Ltd and its trustees oversee the administration of these trusts, and are responsible for the fulfilment of the conditions of the will that established the trust, faithful in perpetuity to the intentions of Alfred and Catherine Forrest.

The Catherine and Alfred Forrest Trust is registered with OSCR with Charity Number SC035699.
