Getting there and getting around
Mannheim is a city of approximately 300,000 residents located in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg in south-west Germany. Situated at the meeting point of the Rhine and Neckar rivers, it forms part of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, one of Germany's major economic centres. Its central European location makes it an excellent base for exploring Germany and neighbouring countries, with destinations such as Heidelberg, Frankfurt, Strasbourg, and Paris easily accessible by rail.
Known as the “City of Squares" due to its unique grid layout, Mannheim offers a vibrant student atmosphere with a mix of cultural attractions, music venues, cafés, restaurants, museums, theatres, and green spaces. The city is highly international, with residents from more than 160 nationalities, creating a welcoming environment for visiting students.
Getting around Mannheim is straightforward thanks to an extensive network of trams, buses, and regional trains. The city centre is compact and walkable, while public transport provides convenient access to residential areas, neighbouring towns, and regional airports. Many students also choose to cycle around the city.
Accommodation
Accommodation is available through both student residences and the private rental market. The University works closely with Studierendenwerk Mannheim, which operates numerous student residences across the city and reserves a limited number of rooms for exchange students. Students may also choose private accommodation, shared flats, or purpose-built student housing. As housing demand can be high, students are encouraged to begin their accommodation search as early as possible.
Please note that St Andrews is unable to guarantee housing at any of our partner institutions. Guidance on finding accommodation abroad is available on the Global Office webpage.Student services and orientation
