The University of Lausanne is a higher teaching and research institution composed of seven faculties where approximately 14,300 students and 3,000 researchers work and study. UNIL is focused on several academic disciplines, especially Medicine, Life Sciences, Geosciences, Environment, Business, Humanities and Social Sciences. An emphasis is placed on an interdisciplinary approach, with close cooperation between students, teaching staff, and professors.

Students on degree programmes in the following subject areas may apply to study abroad during their Junior Honours year at Université de Lausanne (University of Lausanne):

Note: Joint Honours students may only apply for a full year abroad if BOTH subjects are listed above. Joint Honours students applying for one semester must seek permission from both Schools.

Places available may vary from year to year depending on the exchange balance. Numbers for the following academic year will be confirmed at the information meeting.

Living there

Getting there and getting around

At Geneva airport, you will find the train station right next to the airport.

There are many trains to Lausanne; the trip takes about 45 minutes.

Lausanne has a well-connected and cheap public transport network.

Accommodation

For general information about housing in the Lausanne area, please consult the Lausanne Accommodation Office for general advice.

Private renting is also a viable option.

Student services and orientation

The Social Affairs and Student Mobility office organises activities for exchange students during the academic year.

  • Night sledging and cheese fondue at Diablerets
  • Invitation at the shows of the theater La Grange de Dorigny Each exchange student is notified by e-mail about the proposed activities.

    ESN is a student association whose aim is to welcome the exchange students and help them to make the most of the facilities available during their stay in Lausanne. ESN is located at the Anthropole building, office 1128.1, second floor and is open Monday to Friday from 12:00 to 13:00.

More generally, note that on arrival in Switzerland, you will have to pay various administrative costs, which can be fairly significant (visa and residence permit costs, local taxes, a rent guarantee for your accommodation, etc.). It is therefore important to allow for these in your budget.
