At a glance

Washington College, established in 1782, was the first college chartered in the sovereign United States of America. It is a small-scale Liberal Arts college located in Chestertown, Maryland, which is about 75 miles east of Washington DC on the Chesapeake Bay. Chestertown, with a population of 5,600, is a mix of colonial architecture and modern charms and is well known for water sports and fishing. Although in a remote location, Chestertown hosts a rotating schedule of town-wide festivals each year and the College provides free transportation to Annapolis (the state's capital) and New Carrollton metro station (for metro-access to Washington D.C.) each weekend.

Getting there and getting around

Washington College arranges shuttle transport from Baltimore Washington Airport (BWI) to campus on arrival day.

Chestertown is in a fairly rural area and there is no public transport system. the College provides free transportation to Annapolis (the state's capital) and New Carrollton metro station (for metro-access to Washington D.C.) each weekend. Downtown Chestertown is accessible via walking or biking.

Accommodation

Housing is provided for all exchange students. The Global Education Office (GEO) works closely with Residential Life to discuss the requests of Exchange students. Residence Halls and Houses are usually mixed sex/nationality (there is one all-girls dormitory, and a few gender-neutral dormitories) and offer shared rooms (twins/bunks) with shared bathroom facilities; single rooms may be available on request. There are also suite-style dormitories available (slightly more expensive) where 4-7 students live in one suite and share a common area, kitchenette, and a bathroom. Each dormitory has a Resident Assistant (RA) to help all our students' needs in the residence halls. Please note that St Andrews is unable to guarantee housing at any of our partner institutions.

Student services and orientation

The Washington College's Global Education Office (GEO) provides support for incoming exchange students. During the first week, all visiting and matriculating international students participate in a specialized Orientation program, led by GEO and peer-leaders called International Student Guides (ISGs).
