Aix-Marseille Université (Aix-Marseille University)

Overview

At a glance

Aix-Marseille University was established by decree No. 2011-1010 of August 24, 2011. It officially opened on January 1, 2012, replacing the University of Provence, University of the Mediterranean and Paul Cézanne University. Today, as well as being one of the youngest universities in France, it is also the largest in terms of its student body, its faculty and staff, and its budget in the whole of the French-speaking world. These factors combine with the remarkable results already achieved in teaching and research to make Aix-Marseille University a top class higher education and research institution.

Established : 2012
Student Population : 74000
History : Aix-Marseille University was founded in 1409 when Louis II of Anjou, Count of Provence, petitioned the Pisan Antipope Alexander V to establish the University of Provence, making it the fourth-oldest university in France. The institution came into its current form following a reunification of the University of Provence, the University of the Mediterranean and Paul Cézanne University. The reunification became effective on 1 January 2012, resulting in the creation of the largest university in the Francophone world, with about 80,000 students.

Rankings : #387 QS World University Rankings. It is held in high regard by the French government. AMU receives the top level (IDEX) of the French government ‘Excellence Initiative’ funding, making it one of only nine IDEX universities in France.
