Responsible and sustainable computing
The increasingly pervasive deployment of computing systems and technologies means that they affect all areas of society. This raises a variety of concerns and questions about how to develop, deploy and use such technology.
Responsible and Sustainable Computing targets issues ranging from the ethics of using data and technology, environmental sustainability, cultural and geographical inclusivity, and societal and legal effects including human and digital rights. We want to challenge the status quo and help build systems that benefit the public good.
Research into responsibility and sustainability in the School of Computer Science covers a broad range of topics, including:
- data ethics and governance
- data protection and technology law
- digital inclusion
- digital and data rights
- energy-efficient systems
- environmental impact of AI
- environmental sensing
- human-centred design
- privacy and trust
Our regular seminar series includes speakers from within the School, the University and beyond. If you are interested in receiving announcements on these and other related topics then please subscribe to our mailing list at https://selby.st-andrews.ac.uk/sympa/subscribe/respcomp. We also collaborate with groups across the University such as: the Centre for Research into Information, Surveillance & Privacy; Centre for Energy Ethics; Institute of Engineering; Institute of Legal and Constitutional Research; St Andrews Centre for Critical Sustainabilities.
