Our School Values

Our School is defined not only by what we achieve, but by how we work together. These behaviours have been shaped by members of the School of Biology to establish a shared understanding of how we treat one another, communicate, collaborate and contribute to our community.

These represent our collective commitment to creating an environment in which everyone can thrive. Together with the University of St Andrews commitment to be World-leading and Sustainable, and our embedded principles of Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity, members of the School of Biology act:

   Inclusively

Embed equity, diversity and inclusion in all that we do, creating an environment where everyone feels valued, respected and able to contribute fully to the success of our community.

   With integrity

Take responsibility for their own work, give proper credit to others, and uphold the values of the School and academic community through honesty, fairness and accountability.

   Respectfully

Respect the skills, values and opinions of colleagues, students and collaborators, recognising that all members of the School contribute to our shared success.

   Innovatively

Engage in science that pushes boundaries and seek creative solutions that benefit our research, teaching and working environment.

   Openly

Be transparent with colleagues and leaders regarding goals, activities and outcomes, embrace open research and share knowledge and good practice openly.

   Ethically

Uphold the highest standards of integrity, ethical practice and professional conduct in all aspects of the School's work.

   Boldly

All members of the School of Biology will be prepared to take controlled risks in their research, teaching and professional practice, working in the knowledge that the leadership recognises that mistakes are a natural part of the creative/research process.

   Collaboratively

Recognise that the success of the School is built on the contributions of all who work for, study at and engage with our community.
