We have developed policies and processes to enable carers to get the flexibility they may need as well as ensuring they can contribute and flourish within their work and studies.

Carer Positive

In 2022, the University was recognised as an exemplary level (the highest) Carer Positive Employer, acknowledging our commitment to supporting and involving carers within the workplace.

Athena Swan

The University holds a Silver Athena Swan award. As part of the principles of the Athena Swan Charter we are committed to mitigating the gendered impact of caring responsibilities and career breaks.

Our Athena Swan Silver action plan 2024–2028 (PDF) includes actions to better support our staff carers, including through information for line managers on how best to support staff with caring responsibilities and relevant policies.

Academic support

For student carers, Student Services can liaise with your academic school to ensure extra support is arranged and explore options when your caring responsibilities affect your studies.

Students’ Association Carers, Commuters, Mature, and Flexible Learners

Carers, Commuters, Mature, and Flexible Learners is a subcommittee of the Students' Association working to ensure an inclusive student experience.

Support for staff with caring responsibilities

Adjustments to working practices

Our flexible working policy and hybrid working guide support staff in adjusting their working practices to accommodate their caring responsibilities and support work-life balance.

Caring fund

Our Caring fund provides support for caring costs associated with external career development opportunities.

Special leave policy

Special leave includes leave for registered carers and emergency (unplanned) leave to care for a dependent.

Parents and carers staff network

The parents and carers staff network provides a space for self-identified carers to interact, share experiences and network. There are also opportunities to inform the development of EDI policies and strategies.
