Conducting Research Sustainably
Research plays a vital role in solving environmental challenges, but research activities themselves also have environmental impacts. The University is committed to ensuring that research is conducted in ways that minimise environmental harm and maximise positive outcomes.
This work aligns with the UK Concordat for Environmental Sustainability in Research and Innovation and supports delivery of the University's Environmental Sustainability Strategy.
What Researchers Should Consider
Researchers are encouraged to consider sustainability throughout the research lifecycle.
Planning Research
When designing projects, consider:
- Environmental impacts alongside scientific objectives.
- Opportunities to reduce resource consumption.
- The sustainability requirements of funders and collaborators.
- Whether environmental costs have been considered in project plans and budgets.
Travel and Fieldwork
Consider:
- Whether travel is necessary or can be replaced by virtual engagement.
- Choosing lower-carbon transport options where possible.
- Combining trips to reduce travel impacts.
- Sustainable approaches to fieldwork logistics and accommodation.
Data and Digital Sustainability
Researchers should:
- Store data efficiently.
- Avoid unnecessary duplication of datasets.
- Consider the energy implications of data-intensive computing and AI.
- Make effective use of shared digital infrastructure.
Laboratories and Equipment
Researchers should:
- Reduce energy use in laboratories.
- Optimise use of equipment and shared facilities.
- Minimise single-use materials where appropriate.
- Improve recycling and waste management practices.
Procurement and Materials
Consider:
- Purchasing only what is needed.
- Reusing equipment where possible.
- Extending equipment lifecycles.
- Selecting lower-impact suppliers and products.
Conferences and Events
Researchers should consider:
- Low-carbon travel options.
- Hybrid participation where appropriate.
- Sustainable catering and event delivery.
- Reducing printed materials and waste.
Research Outputs and Legacy
Researchers should ask:
- How will this research contribute to environmental sustainability?
- What long-term benefits will be created?
- How can findings be shared effectively with stakeholders and society?
