Find out if you are eligible for our International Foundation programme

At St Andrews we have three different pathways for our international foundation students. These have been designed for overseas students who are studying on a qualification in their high school that does not allow them to apply for direct entry to an undergraduate degree.

Remember, if you are studying a qualification that is recognised for direct entry, such as three A Levels, the HKDSE or a full IB Diploma, you must apply direct. You can see all our undergraduate degrees and register your interest here.

For those students who are overseas for fee purposes and unable to apply for direct entry, you can choose one of three options:

  • International Year One - a range of science programmes which lead on to year two of an undergraduate degree
  • International Year Zero - more general programmes in science, humanities or business which lead to year one of a degree
  • International Pre-Med - various options for those looking at a career in medicine

You can find a full list of available foundation and pre-med programmes on our foundation programme subjects page.

Academic entry requirements for foundation programmes

You can find our course specific entry requirements on each of the programme pages linked above. Each programme will have both academic entry and English Language requirements. Remember, when you apply, we need to see your academic transcripts and a short personal statement. This statement needs to show us your enthusiasm for your chosen subject and why you would like to study at the University of St Andrews. Remember, this is the only time we hear your voice on the application, so share with us any extra-curricular activities that you think support your application.

If you have found the foundation pathway for you and you are ready to apply, you can submit your application today. Don’t forget to read our application tips first and remind yourself of all the things to include in your application.
