Open Research Working Group

The rapidly evolving open research environment presents challenges and opportunities to the University and all our researchers and requires strategic and coordinated oversight.

From 2025, the Open Research Working Group has been replaced by a new sub-committee of the Research, Impact and Innovation Committee
The new Open Research Sub-Committee (ORSC) brings together representatives of the ORWG and the RDM Advisory Group (see below). Further information will be published in due course.

The Open Research Working Group (ORWG) brought together researchers with knowledge and experience of open research practices, relevant professional service units (Library, Research and Innovation Services) and the Principal's Office to consider the University’s approach and policies relating to the evolving open research environment, ensuring benefit to our researchers, the University and the wider community, as well as delivering funder requirements.

The group was chaired by the Vice-Principal (Research and Innovation) and reported to the Research, Impact and Innovation Committee which is also chaired by the Vice-Principal (RCI). Membership of the ORWG included 8 to 12 academic representatives and the group met three or four times each year.

The group maintains an institutional roadmap for open research to set priorities and monitor progress, and feeds relevant actions to the University’s Research Culture group. See the Open Research roadmap summary (PDF).

For further details of the ORWG, membership and roadmap see the Open Research Working Group terms of reference (PDF) .

Sub-groups for operational matters included the Research Data Management (RDM) Advisory Group and the Responsible Metrics Implementation Group.
