Engagement

The School of Physics & Astronomy requires that a student completes at least 75% of the assessment of a module in order to gain credit in it. Consequently, if you are ill and unable to attend a class test or submit a piece of continuous assessment, then, in addition to submitting a  Self-Certificate of Absence, you should also contact the Module Coordinator to arrange an alternative assessment or an extension to the submission deadline. If you are absent from a small-group teaching session please also inform the tutor/lab head in advance if possible.

If you find that special circumstances are significantly affecting your studies, you should alert the School's Director of Teaching as soon as possible. You can do this directly, or through Student Services or the School's Wellbeing Officers (panda_wellbeing@st-andrews.ac.uk). Please get in touch at the first sign of difficulties.

In some cases, for example of longer-term illness, the appropriate mechanism is for a student to apply to take a Leave of absence. This should be discussed with an adviser at Student Services, though the School's Director of Teaching can give some advice on the process and implications. (See also the University’s policy on Leave of Absence, Re-engagement and Withdrawal.)
