Calculators

All students should provide their own scientific calculator for use in laboratories, tutorials, and examinations. Note that programmable calculators, calculators that contain databases and those with text, symbolic or graphic capabilities are not permitted to be used in proctored examinations.
If you are in any doubt about your calculator, please consult the Exams Officer (panda-exams@) or the Director of Teaching (physdot@).

The university requires students have one of the following Scientific Calculator Models:

  • Sharp EL-531 series
  • Helect 2-Line series
  • Renus 2-line series
  • Casio fx-83GT series (incl. GTX and GTCW etc)
  • Casio fx-85GT series (incl. GTX and GTCW etc)

All students on a physics programme will be invited to have their calculator tagged and approved by the School of Physics. Students on other programmes must be tagged by their respective schools. Your calculator must be tagged for use in a university examination. It is your responsibility to ensure your calculator is tagged. Untagged calculators will be confiscated for the examination.

Tagging is for identification only. A student using a calculator tagged with another School's code will not be penalised by invigilators. Information about getting your calculator tagged will be provided by the Module Coordinators during the semester. If you do not have your calculator tagged and believe you should have, please contact the Director of Teaching (physdot@).
