Sibbett Memorial Lecture

25 June 2026

The School held the first Sibbett Memorial Lecture on the 25th June, delivered by Prof. Donna Strickland, winner of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics.  We intend for the Sibbett Memorial lecture series to be an annual event, inviting leading figures from fields related to Prof. Sibbett’s research.  With this aim, Prof. Strickland was an ideal speaker to deliver the inaugral lecture in this series. Prof. Strickland covered the history leading up to her Nobel-prize-winning work on the realisation of Chirped Pulse Amplification, a technique that enabled the production of ultrashort laser pulses.    In the following question and answer session the audience also found out about her experience of receiving the call to tell her she had won.

Prior to her lecture, Prof. Strickland toured the School with visits to biophotonics and photonics laboratories, including a visit to students on the biophotonics summer school which was taking place at the same time, as well as a meeting with visitors from the Ghana Photonics and Optics Laboratory.
