Ramón y Madrid
This project is a collaboration between Dr Ricardo Fernández Romero – School of Modern Languages and Biblioteca Digital / Memoria de Madrid.
This electronic project offers a virtual tour of the Madrid of Ramón Gómez de la Serna (1888-1963). Significant places in Madrid in the life and work of Ramón are connected with newspaper articles, images and other texts. Ramón's relationship with daily life, geography and the phenomenon of the urban embodied in the city of Madrid was constant, almost daily, through a journalism that gathers the most diverse elements, belonging to the History and the small history of the city. Ramon, a stroller, observed the smallest details and the signs of the city's transformation. The 1935 article, "From Old Madrid to New Madrid", offers an affective map of Madrid, divided by the symbolic impact of the construction of the Gran Vía (1910-1928). That division, which he wanted to reconcile, inspires this tour.
The resulting website is connected through links to the research project of Dr Ricardo Fernandez, "The Journalism of Ramón Gómez de la Serna. An author's Library", hosted by the Library of the University of St Andrews.
