Teaching
As DAAD lecturer, my main task is teaching German at all levels, this includes oral, writing and grammar lessons. I try to design my lessons in a way where students do not only learn a new set of vocabulary or grammatical structures, but also actively learn about contemporary life in Germany. My occupation has given me the opportunity to work closely with numerous young people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds and each of them has taught me more about how language and language learning works for different people. Therefore, I try to provide a variety of resources in my lessons, which will hopefully spark student’s interest to keep learning and immerse themselves in the language, also outside of class.
The German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, DAAD) offers a great variety of scholarships for different programmes and purposes for studying in Germany. If you would like to know more about the different types of programmes and scholarships, I am happy to offer guidance.
I am also responsible for the eTandem programme, which is a language exchange programme run by the University of Bonn. It is a great opportunity for students in St Andrews to practice German with a student in Bonn, who in reverse would like to practice English. Students who have already reached an intermediate level can apply anytime during the academic year. Please feel free to reach out to me if you would like to know more about the programme.
Research interests
My research focuses on language acquisition and gender linguistics. I am particularly interested in the relationship between grammatical and semantic gender and how it is expressed in contemporary German, compared to less gendered languages like English.
