Biography

I received my master’s degree from Yerevan State University (Armenia) in 2007 and completed my PhD in the School of Modern Languages at the University of St Andrews in 2019. Both my master’s dissertation and PhD thesis were devoted to studying Egyptian theatre.

I am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a member of the European Association for Modern Arabic Literature, and co-convenor of the Arabic Theatre Working Group within the International Federation for Theatre Research.

Teaching

I teach Arabic on the core language modules at both Sub-Honours and Honours levels and coordinate AR2001 and AR2002 (Intermediate Arabic 1 and 2). I am also involved in teaching Modern Arabic Literature modules at Honours level, as well as Comparative Literature modules at Sub-Honours level. In addition, I developed and coordinate the Honours module AR4471, Contemporary Theatre in the Arab World.

Research areas

Published in 2024, my first monograph, titled Of Kings and Clowns: Leadership in Contemporary Egyptian Theatre since 1967, examines the work of the prominent Egyptian playwrights Yusuf Idris, Lenin El-Ramly, Fathia El-Assal, and Mohamed Abul-Ela El-Salamouny. My current project focuses on the work of late-twentieth-century Egyptian women playwrights.
