Overview

Dr Virginia H Santiago has been an academic GP since 2011. She moved to the University of St Andrews in November 2017, after being working in research in Dundee for over 6 years. Her research interests are in infectious disease epidemiology and antimicrobial stewardship in Primary Care, with a special focus on antimicrobial misuse and its implications for resistance and adverse health outcomes (healthcare associated infections), and methods for improving the quality of antimicrobial prescribing in the community, including intervention development (clinical trials) and evaluation. Although she's based within the Division of Population and Behavioural Sciences, she also works across and collaborates with the Infection and Global Health, and Medical Education divisions within the School.

She is part of the EU GRIN Network (General Practice Research on Infections), and a member of the Spanish Society of General Practice special interest group on Infectious Diseases.

Prior to that, she was a CSO PhD Clinical Academic Training Fellow, and NES GP Academic Fellow at Dundee University, having qualified as a General Practitioner with Disctintion in Madrid, Spain, in 2010. The title of her PhD project was ?Primary care antimicrobial stewardship: impact on prescribing and resistance?.
