Research areas

Dr Sloan is an academic Infectious Diseases clinician, leading his own independent research group at the University of St Andrews.  He has worked in both high and low income countries, accruing extensive experience in the management of infectious diseases, particularly tuberculosis (TB), and continues to have extensive collaborative links with partners around the world. His research funding comes from external sources including the Wellcome Trust, UKRI / MRC (UK) and the Europe and Developing Countries Clinical Trial Partnership (EDCTP).

In additional to his role at the University of St Andrews, he works with Radboudumc in The Netherlands as international co-ordinator of UNITE4TB, a large public-private partnership consortium working to develop new treatments for TB, with 30 partner institutions and clinical trials sites 13 countries on 3 continents.

He has supervised 8 successful PhD students, and has five PhD students under current supervision.

Dr Sloan is also a practicing physician in NHS Fife, and has an interest in the acute management of infectious disease outbreaks and has supported humanitarian responses to Ebola Virus Disease (Sierra Leone, 2015 and preparedness deployments to Rwanda in 2018 and 2019), diphtheria (displaced Rohingya population in Bangladesh, 2018), HIV (Ukraine, 2022), and cholera (Malawi, 2023). He is the UK-Med and UK Emegency Medical Team technical referent for Infectious Diseases.
