Methods that move
In April and May 2022, the School of Management is hosting a series of interdisciplinary qualitative research methods workshops for postgraduate research students across Scotland. The workshop series is called 'Methods that Move: Affective methods for qualitative researchers', and it forms part of the Scottish Graduate School of Social Science (SGSSS) and Scottish Graduate School for Arts & Humanities (SGSAH) annual 'Spring into Methods' programme.
Methods that Move is led by Dr Anna Brown in collaboration with Dr Olga Loza from the School of Geography and Sustainable Development, and Alyssa Wells and Dr Benet Reid, both from the School of Management.
Over the course of three days, the workshops explore the 'turn to affect' in qualitative research. The sessions provide opportunities to consider how researchers can acknowledge the embodied and affective capacities that they bring to their work and of those they study.
The workshops leaders hope to help develop an interdisciplinary network of affective researchers and instill confidence in those who embark on doing research 'differently'.
In the first two workshops, which were held online, participants discussed the qualities of affect, and an ethic of care. Anna, Olga and Alyssa also shared their respective research work on:
- autoethnography of craft work
- modalities of care
- becoming a method(ologist).
Methods that Move will conclude on Tuesday 3 May 2022, when participants will be welcomed to St Andrews for practical sessions, to experience for themselves some of the theoretical ideas explored in earlier workshops.
