We are pleased to announce that two of our School of International Relations faculty have been awarded Small Grants from the Scottish Council on Global Affairs’ State of the World Initiative, which sponsors a series of events and outcomes taking stock of the critical impact that global affairs can have on domestic policy and lived experience in Scotland.

The "State of Asylum" project, by the Centre for the Critical Reimagining of Human Rights (CCRHR), aims to help the general public, and the incoming cohort of MSPs, understand the human rights stakes involved – for all members of society – in debates over asylum in Scotland and the UK. The project, led by principal investigator Dr Natasha Saunders and co-investigator Professor David Herd (School of English) features a 4-episode podcast miniseries, a public roundtable of leading experts in UK asylum policy, and a policy-maker workshop exploring the challenges and possibilities at the intersection of asylum and human rights in Scotland.

The "Militarising the Fight Against Crime? Lessons for Scotland" project, by principal investigator Dr Norma Rossi and co-investigator Agustin Hernandez Berea brings together extensive Scottish and international expertise on the effects of militarising crime control in the UK and globally. This trend, strongly supported by far-right parties and rhetoric, demands urgent attention. The project examines its socio-political impacts and its influence on the structure, identity, and role of the armed forces.
