Lieutenant General (Retd) Richard Nugee CB CVO CBE visits University

24 November 2025

Lieutenant General (Retd) Richard Nugee CB CVO CBE visited the University of St Andrews in November 2025. Nugee delivered a master class about the implications of climate change on the security of the world, geopolitical implications, supply chain issues, and the adaptation and mitigations required.

Nugee shone a light on how the government faces multiple challenges all stemming from the insidious effect of climate change. Nugee discussed issues such as rising sea temperatures affecting supply chains, diminished soil quality threatening food security, mass migration forced by rising temperatures, health threats from the melting of permafrost releasing unknown microbes, and movement of disease-carrying mosquitos to the hotter European climate.

The event, introduced by Professor Phillips O’Brien following a two-minute silence for Remembrance, was attended by PhD and International Relations students, St Andrews scientists, and staff. Faculty attendees included Master of United College Professor Ineke De Moortel, Professor Kristen Harkness, Professor James Rae, and Dr TJ Young.
