Alexander Stewart was an ensign, with Alexander Hamilton's [SSNE 580] recruited regiment in 1629. He served at the same level in John Hamilton's [SSNE 2828] regiment in 1630 and became a lieutenant in that regiment by 1631. His promotion to captain followed the following year, and that year he and Major Uchtreid Macdougal [SSNE 2854], and Captains James Hamilton [SSNE 2586] and John Hamilton [SSNE 2594] he received 6 months leave to undertake recruitment in Scotland for the Duke of Weimar's regiment. He could still be found at that rank in 1637. In that year he had received permission to apprehend deserters from his regiment in Scotland.
