Colonel John Kinnemond served as a lieutenant with Filip von Mansfeld's recruited infantry regiment in 1621. He was listed as chief masterwatchman in 1622 for Kristoffer Assarsson Mannerskold's Vastergotland regiment and must soon after have been promoted to major there, a position he later held in Johan Baner's Ostergotland regiment in 1624. Kinnemond's promotion continued and he served as lieutenant colonel in 1626. That year a Colonel Kinnemond was noted holding the Polish town of Mewe with 150 musketeers. The following year Chancellor Oxenstierna authorised the return of two chests of tools to one of the Mewe residents, after the resident had complained of Kinnemond's requistioning of the goods. He became colonel for a regiment from Närke Värmland in 1628. In December that year Chancellor Oxenstierna decided that Kinnemond and his troops should disembark at Pillau, and that certainly by January 1629 he became governor of the garrison there. The Chancellor certainly believed Kinnemond's role to be vital, telling him in February that all of Prussia depended on the port and garrison at Pillau (“..ähr mijn alvarlige villie, att i medh edra underofficerer låten edher på thet högsta vara angeleget, det god vacht och vård hoos edher motte hollas, icke annorledes ähn såsom det vore fiendtligit och osekert tillstånd, på thet H. may:tts festning och Pillous hamn, aff hvilken heela Pryssen dependerar, så matte aff edher de[f]enderet och I ackt tagit varda, att I det tryggeligen kunnen försvara”). the following month the garrison was hit with illness and Oxenstierna ordered that arriving soldiers should be placed elswhere, until the infection passed, although in May it was decided that due to the effects of illness his regiment should return to Sweden and be replaced by Colonel Essen's regiment. In April Kinnemond was called upon to find and apprehend two German knights who had gone AWOL. This is possibly the same Colonel John Kinnemond that is recorded as a Swedish Governor of Nöteborg/Nettenburg (Oreshek), a Russian border fortress taken by the Swedes from 1629. That year the military college in Stockholm instructed him to inform them twice a year about news of his post, and he wrote them about repairs undertaken to the fort. In 1636 he obtained a birth-brief from the Privy Coucil of Scotland. The Kammarekollegium records refer to him on 8 November 1636. He died on 24 March 1638.
