Uchtred Macdougal began his service in Sweden as an ensign with William Lawson's [SSNE 2899] squadron, part of James Ramsay's [SSNE 3315] regiment in 1628. In 1629 he became a captain in John Meldrum's [SSNE 572] regiment and in 1630 transferred John Hamilton's [SSNE 2595] regiment. In 1632 he was given a 6 month pass, along with Captains James Hamilton [SSNE 2586], John Hamilton [SSNE 2594] and Alexander Stewart [SSNE 3572], to recruit in Scotland in order to strengthen the Duke of Weimar's regiment. Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna specified that these men were to be supplied with rifles, muskets and pikes on their arrival in Germany. That year he apparently led a company of between 100-400 men from "England" (not certain if it was "Britain" or "England" that was meant) and served as a major. He remained in Swedish service for many more years. In 1665 his petition to the Scottish Privy Council was passed and he received a birthbrieve confirming his Scottish origins as stated by Lord Cochrane and othersSwedish Krigsarkiv, Muster Roll, 1628/7-11,13-15; 1629/5-8,11,16,18-20; 1630/22-25,28-33; 1631/12-15; 1632/31; Register of the Privy Council of Scotland, 3rd series, II, 1665-1669, p.36; Rikskansleren Axel Oxenstiernas skrifter och brefvexling, first series, VII, pp.108, 346, 805.
