James or Jacob Hamilton began his service in the Norwegian army as a corporal with Robert Hamilton's company of Eckstein's cavalry in July 1657. He continued with various units, including the Smaalenske infantry and the Akershus infantry until 1678, rising in rank to captain. Ovenstad notes the arrival of a Lieutenant Captain Jacob Hamilton in Claus Brockenhus's infantry between January and September 1679, and this is probably the same individual. He is probably related to the man of the same name [SSNE 293] and Elizabeth Hamilton [SSNE 6751] may be his mother
