Text source

James Hamilton is often listed as coming from England, though his name and date of entry into the Danish-Norwegian army is more suggestive of a Scottish refugee from Cromwell's regime. Hamilton served the House of Oldenburg from 1656, begining as a corporal in Robert Hamilton's company of Eckstein's cavalry. He later served with the Norwegian Smålenske infantry between November 1667 to August 1676 rising to the rank of Colonel. In particular he served with the Lifecompany in Stavanger. On 25 March 1676 he received 400 riksdaler towards his travel allowance. However, he was dead and buried by February 1677 when Fru Sidtzel Grube was given 200 rixdaler for his funeral. His widow Elisabeth [SSNE 6751] sought travel expenses on 12th May 1678 to return to her native country of England. There must be a family relationship with the man of the same name who served in the same regiments [SSNE 1320]
